Homemade Gift Inspiration
Lemon Body Scrub
Body scrubs are easy to make and they smell so good you’ll want to eat them – and you can eat this one, but that means less for your skin! Buff away all the impurities and dryness of your skin with this zesty citrus little number for a DIY gift that is both useful and great value for money.
This recipes takes only 10 minutes to make and smells just as good if not better than the expensive store bought versions.
You will need:
- 2 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1 lemon
- 1 jar
Method:
Add the sugar to a large bowl and put to one side. In a microwavable bowl add the coconut oil and heat for about 30 seconds or less so that the oil melts. Pour this over the sugar and mix well.
Grate or zest the rind of 1 lemon before juicing the lemon completely. Filter the juice to ensure there are no seeds or pulp in the liquid. Add the zest and juice to the sugary mix and combine. It’s that simple! If your scrub is still too wet then add a little more sugar until the desired texture is achieved, otherwise you are all done. Simply decant into a small jar and add a label.
Button Bookmarks
Does your mum love to read? Or perhaps she is a good cook and is always trawling through cook books and marking recipes? Well this will be a really handy gift then.
Collect unusual buttons, beads and adornments and glue to the top of paperclips before covering with felt. This way you have beautiful page keepers and you won’t have messy glue on show. So simple right? And they look amazing sticking out of the top of books!
Coasters
To sit back and enjoy a good cup of tea you need some good coasters, so try creating your own with these easy tips and then wrap them up in ribbon for a great Mother’s Day gift.
Head down to your local hardware store and pick up a small pack of tiles. They don’t have to be expensive but the size is important, you want to aim for 4.25” x 4.25”. To turn these into coasters, add pattern using scrapbook paper and decoupage glue and prevent marking your tables by adding a felt underside. A light spray of clear acrylic sealer will protect them from the heat of your mug.
Activities for the Day
Mother’s Day is all about spending time together so head over to your parents’ house, put your car keys and phone aside and enjoy a day in each other’s company. Of course we’re not suggesting you just sit there and do nothing all day – that would be boring!
If you have a family of foodies then you could prepare a meal together for a special sit down dinner. Cook all of your mum’s favourite dishes and gorge on classics from your childhood. You could even bake a cake and decorate together. A Victoria sponge with fresh strawberries and cream always goes down well.
For those of you who are not master chefs in the making then a walk through the countryside would be lovely – and free! If it rains then a great indoor activity would be to get all the old photo albums out and make a photo collage in a frame for your parents’ wall. That’s a nice little walk down memory lane for all of you.
What do you think of our ideas for a Mother’s Day celebration on a budget? There’s no need to go and buy a £30 bouquet of flowers and a bottle of champagne! If you have any great bargain gift ideas then let us know – we’d love to hear them.
